Dzaoudzi ou Dzaudzi a pendant longtemps été le chef-lieu de l’archipel des Comores, puis de Mayotte avant le décret du 11 février 1977 qui fixe le chef-lieu à Mamoudzou. Cette ville-rocher a toujours joui d’un intérêt particulier des habitants de l’île, intérêt que les colons français vont amplifier en en faisant la tête de pont pour conquérir le reste des îles Comores et la grande île de Madagascar.
Les historiens nous apprennent que l’îlot fut habité à partir du IXe siècle par des populations venues d’Afrique, d’Indonésie et de Madagascar. Dans tous les cas des populations noires car c’est à partir d’elles que la petite île tient son nom. En effet, si on en croit Barreau , son nom est donné par les Négriers arabes, Dzaudzi viendrait de l’arabe djazair aswadji, ce qui peut être traduit par l’île des Noirs.
Les arabes ou Perses seraient venus plus tard s’y installer. On situe généralement cette arrivée au XVIIIe siècle. C’est à la fin de cette période que Dzaudzi prend de l’importance et devient le lieu de résidence des Sultans qui la préfèrent désormais à la ville de Tsingoni à l’ouest de l’île Le dernier sultan de l’île, Andriantsuli, y avait fait sa résidence-forteresse ayant compris les avantages de défenses naturelles qu’offrait « le rocher », il renforça la protection de la ville en y faisant ériger des murailles et construisant trois portes qui étaient sous son contrôle de telle sorte qu’il pouvait en surveiller les mouvements d’entrée et de sorties. Mais cette forteresse qu’il amplifia, lui servit également de prison puisque ayant été floué par le Qadhi Omar Abu Bakar et contraint par les Français de signer un acte de cession de l’île, il y fut maintenu en résidence surveillée, n’a pu quitter la petite île jusqu’ à sa mort en 1847.
Lorsque les Français remplacent ce dernier en 1841 en tant que seul pouvoir légitime de facto, non de jure, ils ont vite compris l’importance stratégique de l’îlot en matière de défense et en font un centre administratif dirigé par l’armée. Son conquistador, le commandant Passot construit rapidement des bâtiments abritant les prérogatives d’une puissance coloniale en expansion, à savoir, une caserne militaire, une chapelle pour les missionnaires, une prison pour enfermer les rebelles et un hôpital pour y soigner les malades et blessés qu’engendre en général toute entreprise coloniale. Toujours est-il que la ville reste en quelque sorte la propriété des militaires. Une note des Archives départementales de Mayotte nous apprend alors que « la population civile n’avait pas droit de cité »
La ville devient le chef-lieu de l’archipel des Comores après que celui-ci eut acquis une autonomie financière et administrative par la loi du 9 mai 1946, se détachant ainsi de Madagascar à laquelle il était rattaché. De là, l’autonomie de l’archipel ne cesse de s’élargir, lui demandant ainsi de s’équiper de nouvelles infrastructures pour accueillir de nouvelles administrations. Les autorités jugèrent alors que Dzaudzi était trop exigu pour les besoins du territoire des Comores.
Le 20 mai 1958, on prend la décision de transférer le chef-lieu à Moroni. Les habitants de Dzaudzi qui bénéficiaient des emplois générés par le statut de chef-lieu s’y opposent. Mais en 1962, le transfert est entamé.
L’îlot de Dzaudzi est aujourd’hui une zone urbaine très peuplée, 17 831 habitants recensés en 2017. On y a implanté l’aéroport international de l’île-hippocampe et ses sites naturels ainsi que ses rades d’une beauté exceptionnelle continuent à charmer les visiteurs.
